My Role
I was hired by Boston Cyberarts gallery to design brand identity and campaign collateral, including posters, flyers, and social media material, for the Boston Immersive Music Festival, an upcoming series of contemporary and experimental audio-visual shows.
About
The Boston Immersive Music Festival consists of 21 live audio-visual events held over seven weekends, from September 13 to October 26, at the Boston Cyberarts Gallery in Jamaica Plain, Boston, MA. Audiences can experience live jazz, world, and experimental music in a whole new way by interacting with the reborn 3D Outerspace Visual Communicator (OVC) through VR goggles and high-resolution projections.
PROJECT
Background
My previous experience curating the Fresh Media show in 2023 gave me a strong familiarity with Boston Cyberarts' identity and its significance in the Boston media arts scene.
Boston Immersive Music Festival was pitched by Bill Sebastian who is the creator of the OVC (Outerspace Visual Communicator), which was a giant machine, played with hands and feet, that allowed artists to create and finger-paint with light similar to how musicians create and explore sound with their instruments. The name of the instrument arose from Sebastian’s collaboration with Sun Ra, the legendary jazz composer, in the 1970s and 1980s.
Brand Identity Design
I designed a logo for the Boston Immersive Music Festival that captures its electrifying energy, nostalgic essence, and experimental spirit. The logo blends bold, assertive typography with forms that are both mechanical and fluid, symbolizing the dynamic interplay between rigid computer technology and fluid visualizations.
Print Media
After creating the logo, iconography, and symbols, along with a color palette featuring sharp black, yellow, and a touch of pink—drawn from the primary colors of the OVC (Outerspace Visual Communicator)—I moved on to designing posters, flyers, postcards, and other print collateral for the campaign.
I incorporated grainy gradient flows that align with the computer-generated visuals of the OVC, while accent colors like pink, grey, and blue were used to highlight various elements.
Digital Platforms
I was also responsible for creating digital design materials, including Instagram posts, stories, and content for other social media channels. This effort successfully attracted a larger audience from Boston through targeted social media marketing. I used Figma to design a series of device-friendly visuals.
Merchandise
Boston Cyberarts, Inc. is a non-profit organization focused on promoting and showcasing a broad range of media arts, including electronic and digital experimental art. I curated and participated in the Fresh Media show in 2023 through my MFA program at Massachusetts College of Art and Design,
I had the honor of designing the identity for one of the most outstanding and diverse lineup in the Boston music scene.
Marketing
Marketing presented a challenge, as Boston Cyberarts previously didn't have a dedicated graphic designer. This gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills. I designed flyers and bus stop signage to maximize audience reach, marking one of the first instances where Boston Cyberarts charged tickets for a show.
